Generation No. 1

1. BENJAMIN1 REED was born 1772, and died December 10, 1810 in Casey County, Kentucky. He married ELEANOR YOCUM 1792 in Mercer County, Kentucky, daughter of HENRY YOCUM, SR. ESQUIRE. She died 1815.

Notes for BENJAMIN REED:

Benjamin was born circa 1772 and lived in Garrard County. He married Eleanor Yocum of Mercer County, Kentucky on April 3, 1792.

Elanor was born in 1775 or 1776. She was the daughter of His Excellancy Henry Sr. Esquire Yocum of Virginia and later of Mercer County Kentucky. he can also be found on the Tax List of early Casey County Kentucky. The 1795 Census of Kentucky showes Benjamin and Eleanor still living in Mercer County Kentucky.

On January 28, 1803, in Garred County, Kentucky, Benjamin and Eleanor purchased a certain track of land from Jacob and Nelly Bowman for 100 pounds. THis land was on Dicks River and contained 90 acres.

On April 15, 1803, Benjamin and Eleanor purchased 51 acres from Henry Yocum, Eleanor's father, for 50 pounds. This tract of land was aslo situated on Dicks River and incluced Henry Yocum's residence.

Mach 18, 1805 Benjamin and Eleanor sold 100 acres in Garrard County Kentucky to John Bowman and on March 21, 1809 they sold 49 1/4 acres to Benjamin Wilds.

Benjamin died in 1810 in Casey County Kentucky and owned land at the time of his death. Eleanor died in 1815

Big South Fork - Ellisburg Community

Contributed by Mr. and Mrs. George Woodson Ellis. Ellisburg was named for Richard Ellis, an early settler. He and his wife, Kitty Johns, came to Kentucky from Norfolk, Virginia in 1795. Ellis had five land grants in 1784-1785 covering 1 ,648½ acres.

A mill was located on Ellis Big Spring. The spring was in a creek near the Methodist Church and the home of the late George Peyton. The mill was used for grinding corn and wheat and was also a saw mill. Customers came from a wide area of the surrounding county. On Dec. 12, 1912 the mill was blown up, almost killing Walter Ellis and Clabe Coffman.

A Union Church serving Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterians, and later Christians was one of the first buildings erected. Later the Baptist built their own church. The Concord Methodist Church is a landmark of Ellisburg. The Ellis heirs gave the ground and the deed dated June 7, 1834 was written by Joel Sweeney, County Court Clerk. The first trustees were Thomas Starns, Thomas Speed, Morris Coulter, and David Reed. In 1977 there are two churches at Ellisburg, the Methodist and Baptist.

The post office at Ellisburg was established 30 April 1879. The first postmasters were Frank T. Ellis, 30 April 1879, followed by Winfred K. Hughes, 7 Jan. 1880. Mrs. Amanda Ellis Mills, granddaughter of Richard Ellis, became the first postmistress on March 6, 1884 and served in this job for forty-eight years.

School was held in the church and taught by Col. Frank Wolford. The first school was built above the church at the forks of the creek. As the population increased another school was built in front of the church. Broadus Cochran and Hargrove Mitcham were among those teaching in this school. In 1892 another school was built and in 1928 a room was added. Trustees who sold the old building and grounds were: W. W. Mills, D. W. Jones, and R. M. Coulter. Mrs. Amanda Mills purchased the property. Elbert Wesley, Molly Gadberry, Sam Coffey, Miss Willie Fogle, Martha Tilford, James Murphy, R. H. Jeter, Nancy McFarland, Nancy Elliott Young, Mary D. Young, Nannie McFarland, Dimple Ellis McAnnelly, Carl Allen, E. V. Carrier, and George Gibbs were among the teachers at Ellisburg. This school was torn down and the children now attend the Cox Elementary School.

Many outstanding families who are descendants of the early settlers still live in Ellisburg in 1977. They are: Ellis, Peyton, Reid, Gadberry, Coffman, Young, Drye, Cunningham, Coulter, Hafley, Lane, Russell, Starnes, Smith, Brown, Cummins, Powers, Downey, Turpin, Quarles, Lynns, Carpenter, Moore, Porter, Burns, Pendegraft, Hair and Spieds.

*THE PARIS NEWS, Friday, February 10, 1933: 'Charge of murder has been filed against A. L. Reed, 74, in connection with the slaying of his wife, Mrs. Prudie E. Reed, about 70, at Tigertown on the night of January 25, Sheriff Clyde Shelton announced Thursday morning. Reed had been held in jail for several days although no charges had been filed against him. Reed made no statement other than to deny his guilt. The aged woman was found in her bed with her skull crushed from being struck with a blunt instrument and died within about two hours. She did not recover consciousness. Although Justice of the Peace A. W. Sheffield who conducted an inquest, returned a verdict of death from wounds inflicted with a blunt instrument, officers did not find any trace of the weapon. The woman was found by her husband, who called neighbors. The couple was alone, sleeping in separate rooms, according to Reed. He said he heard a noise in her room and going to investigate found her lying in a pool of blood with her skull crushed. The arrest of the husband followed several days of investigation on the part of officers.'

John E. Reed married Rebecca Francis Pigg Reed after his brother Burrel had him promise to take care of his wife Rebecca Frances Pigg if he didn't return from the Civil War. Burell didn't return so John married her and they raised Rebecca and Burrel's two children and went on to have Artie Reed.

Kidd's Store and Post Office

Kidd's Store, an early landmark, was built by Elijah Kidd on about two acres of land secured from Ben Mays. It was the business center and the only good stop between Liberty and Hustonville for eighty-six years. It was located about ten miles from Liberty. All supplies were hauled by teams and wagons from Moreland and McKinney until about 1927. The store was located near a good spring and creek where mules and horses could be watered. A blacksmith shop located there repaired wagon tires and shod the horses. Some of the blacksmiths working there were: George Huston, Emmet "Buck" Goode, Jim "Minnow" Snow, and Sam Campbell.

The post office at Kidd's Store opened 30 March 1887 with Elijah Kidd as the first postmaster. It operated until 15 April 1954.

The store built about 1876 had many owners: Luther Brown, Barney Lay, Hudson Bohan, Clem Camden, Noah Snow, Cleve Wilcher, Herbert Smiley and Fitch Brown. When U.S. Highway 127 was built, all buildings were gone. First Kidd's store was located on old highway 35 (now U.S. 127) below the present residence of John W. Weddle Jr. Elias Kidd Sr. operated the store, which later became the site of Boyle Post Office. Herbert Russell remembers driving flocks of turkeys there as a child. The wings of the turkeys were tied and the lead turkey had a bell around his neck.
