10 Years Ago - Week of February 2, 1994

James M. "J.O." Wilkerson resigned from the Liberty City Council after serving for only two months.  He said personal heal concerns were a factor in his resignation.

A new crew visited Liberty to attend two city council meetings in an effort to compile material for ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings.

Staff members of the Casey County News received eight Kentucky Press Association awards in a state-wide Better Newspaper Contest.

A special-called meeting of the Liberty City Council had to be  canceled when four councilmen failed to show up.  A meeting scheduled  for the following day was forced to adjourn after public outcry about Mayor Freddie Goode refusing to recognize motions made by the council.

A lawsuit filed by the City of Liberty against a businessman who refused to shut down his used car lot business was scheduled to go to trail on May 13.  The business was not in compliance with city zoning laws.

Four Casey County school buses got stuck on poorly maintained roads while attempting to puck up students on their routes.

A boil-water advisory remained in effect for many Casey County residents following a 10  day old waterline break in both city and county waterlines.

A nine-ounce bag of valentine Hershey's Kisses candy was $1.39 at Right Aid.

20 Years Ago - Week of February 1, 1984

Hickory Hills Market on US 127 north of Liberty at Shorttown Road opened for business.

Three Casey County men were arrested for stealing gasoline from a county school bus.

Two Casey County men pleaded guilty to illegally spotlighting deer.  District Judge Roger Elliott fined each of the men $500.

Lewis C. Foster of Bethelridge was seriously inujured in a one-vehicle accident on KY 1552 (Shorttown Road) when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel.

Mr. & MRs. Bernal Wilkerson of Liberty celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

The Louisville Store held a 50 percent off sale on all merchandise.

A 12 ounce package of Lay's balogna was $1.09 at Food World.

Chicken livers were 49 cents a pound at A&D Supermarket.

30 Years Ago - Week of February 7, 1974

More than 200 people in Casey County were at risk of losing their job due to a national trucking strike.

A petit jury set County Judge Garfield Griffin's salary at $7,000.  Jurors were first instructed cy Circuit Judge Jason C. Carter Jr. that the salary could not be less than $4,200 nor more than $8,000.

A record 33 people spent a Saturday night in the Casey County Jail after being charged with a variety of drinking and driving violations.

Tom and Faye McAninch sold the Green River Builders Supply on Campbellsville Street in Liberty to Kerry Cundiff and Danny Jeffries.

A Russell County Man Reported four guns stolen from his car while he and his family were out of the  vehicle eating at a Liberty restaurant.  Also taken in the theft was a diaper bag holding four diapers and three baby bottles.

Fiscal court named a new board for the Casey County Hospital.  Appointed to the board were Carrie Lee Hicks, Bobby McKinney, Bruce Brown, Raymond Overstreet, Marshall Pierce and Judge Garfield Griffin.

A 24 count package of Kerns dinner rolls was 49 cents at A&D Supermarket.

The years best nature film, "Vanishing Wilderness," was showing at the Kentuckian Theater with Rex Allen as the narrator.

40 Years Ago - Week of February 06, 1964

Social Security payments of $1 million were expected to be received by qualifying Casey County residents for 1964.

Pickle prices were raised 50 cents per hundred pounds by Hirach Brothers of Louisville.  The company had brought pickling cucumbers from Casey County farmers for the past three years.

Bobby Woodrum, 19, accidentally discharged a shotgun as he was breaking the gun down and shot himself in the foot.  The entrance wound left a hole in his foot about an inch in diameter. 

Casey Countians with their eyes to the sky saw a flock of about 36 ducks flying north over the county

Edgar Snow of Frey's Creek found an unidentified non-poisonous snake sunning itself on the last day of January.

A barn belonging to John W. and Leonard Weddle was destroyed by far.  The estimated loss was around $2,000 which included about $500 worth of feed.

The Rainbow Drive-In Restaurant was offering a  Valentine's Day special of 10 hamburgers for $1.00.

Sic cans of School Day peas were $1.00 at A&D Supermarket.

"Beach Party" was showing at the Kentuckian Theater with Bob Cummings, Dorothy Malone, Frankie Avalon and Annette Funichello.

50 Years Ago - Week of February 4, 1954

W. C. Snider of Danville was awarded a $286,138 contract to construct 3.6 miles of Highway 35  between Dunnville and Phil.

Casey Stone Company was delivering lime to all areas of the county for $3.00 a ton.

A bright sunny February 2, was a sure sign that the groundhog saw its shadow in Casey County. The event meant six more week of winter was ahead.

Juanita Herren and Chris Payton were seriously inured in a two vehicle accident near Jacktown.

Four babies were born on the same day at the Casey County War Memorial Hospital.

The recipe of the week, "Potatoes on the Half Shell" was published in The Casey County News by fool specialist Florence Imlay of the University of Kentucky.

Ladies springs suites were $16.95 at The Louisville Store.

"Treasure of Sierra Madre" was showing at the Kentuckian Theater with Humphrey Bogart.
